aseity

aseity
The word 'aseity' comes from the phrase 'a se' meaning 'from himself'. The doctrine of God's aseity is the doctrine that God does not derive his existence or nature from any external source. Traditionally, it has been put somewhat more paradoxically as the doctrine that God derives his existence and nature from himself. The importance of the doctrine lies in the concomitant insistence that aseity belongs to nothing other than God - everything else derives its existence and nature from him.
